As part of an agreement between the SA and Federal Governments, Adelaide is set to host the new Australian Space Agency with an initial federal investment of $41 million.
Once operational, the ASA will employ 20 full-time staff to focus on growing a native satellite and orbital industry for Australia.
Premier of South Australia Steven Marshall commented on the proposal, saying that “South Australia is the ideal location for the Australian Space Agency with a range of local space industry businesses already established here as well as a rapidly growing defence industry sector.
“Establishing the headquarters of the Australian Space Agency in South Australia will launch our space and defence sectors to the next level.”
Lot 14, the site designated for the new agency, was home to the Royal Adelaide Hospital, which has since moved a kilometre to the west. Renewal SA has earmarked this as one of their flagship projects.
The new Australian Space Agency will encompass only part of Lot 14, which sprawls over 7-hectares of land. The site is designated to become Australia's 'first creation and innovation neighbourhood' and will be conveniently located in the heart of Adelaide.
Renewal SA is guided by a 30-Year Plan for Greater Adelaide and was established to facilitate unique development opportunities for the private sector and not-for-profit housing, through access to government land holdings.
Some other major existing projects include; a high quality residential development in Seaford Meadows; a new Adelaide Festival Plaza on the riverbank entertainment precinct; and new quality social housing in the vicinity of Blair Athol.
